Is Italy Safe for Solo Female Travelers?
Overall, I felt very safe traveling alone in Italy. Like any destination, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in larger cities and crowded tourist areas. The biggest issue for tourists is pickpocketing.
I usually just wear a crossbody bag and keep it positioned in front of my body in busy areas. I also keep my hand over the zipper when navigating crowded tourist attractions and packed public transportation. If you want more security, you can order a anti-theft bag like this for your belongings.
Transportation Options for Solo Female Travel in Italy
One of the reasons solo female travel in Italy is so easy is because the transportation system is excellent. Italy’s train network connects major cities and smaller towns efficiently, making it easy to travel without a car.
Traveling between destinations like Rome, Florence, Venice, and Cinque Terre was straightforward and stress-free. In larger cities, public transportation systems were also easy to navigate.
For solo travelers, trains are especially convenient because:

- You can avoid the stress of driving abroad
- It’s easy to plan multi-city itineraries
Italy is one of those countries where it’s easy to transit between locations as a solo traveler. If you don’t feel comfortable using public transportation, you can use ride-share apps like Uber.

A lot of people worry about eating alone while traveling, but I never had an issue dining solo in Italy. I wasn’t turned away from restaurants, and I found it easy to enjoy meals on my own.

Another great aspect of solo female travel in Italy is the number of accommodations that are perfect for solo occupants. You could choose an affordable stay at a monastery, which you can read more about here.

Booking Tours: Solo Female Travel in Italy
Booking tours as a solo female traveler was very easy. I never ran into any issues where a minimum of two participants was required. I was even able to book a pesto-making class in Cinque Terre for one person.
I went on a Rome Bar Crawl that I highly recommend. I had a lot of fun and it was nice to go out with other travelers. Our guides were amazing and made sure we stayed safe during the tour.

If you’re an English speaker and worried about the language barrier, I found English to be widely spoken throughout the places I visited in Italy.
In tourist-heavy destinations like Rome, Florence, Venice, and Cinque Terre, many hotel staff, restaurant workers, and tour guides spoke enough English to communicate easily.
However, don’t let fear of language barriers stop you from traveling somewhere new. Apps like Google Translate can be incredibly helpful. Plus, smiling and miming goes a lot further than you’d think.
