If you’re looking to experience a traditional ryokan with a private onsen, Yamanouchi Japan should be high on your list. Tucked away in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, this charming hot spring town is known for its peaceful atmosphere, natural beauty, and snow monkey park. Where to Stay in Yamanouchi Japan with a Private Onsen
One of the best ways to experience Yamanouchi Japan is by staying in a traditional ryokan, and I had an incredible stay at Shibu Onsen Kokuya.
This was genuinely one of the best stays I’ve ever had. Having my own private onsen right on my patio was a truly memorable experience. There’s nothing quite like soaking in a hot spring bath after a day of exploring.
In addition to the private onsen, the property also offers several larger onsens that you can reserve at different times. Each one is said to have unique health benefits. This is the perfect way to relax and pamper yourself during your trip to Japan.
Public and Private Onsens in Yamanouchi Japan
One of the most unique aspects of visiting Yamanouchi Japan is the opportunity to experience onsen hopping. When you stay in the town, you’ll receive access to multiple public onsens scattered throughout the area. So even though you could just relax in your private onsen, it might be fun to check out some of the public ones.
Wandering from bath to bath in your yukata and geta sandals is one of the main activities here and part of the fun. Those geta sandals can be tricky to walk it, so be careful!
Visit the Famous Snow Monkey Park in Yamanouchi Japan
A trip to Yamanouchi wouldn’t be complete without visiting the nearby Jigokudani Monkey Park, also known as the Snow Monkey Park.
Getting there is part of the adventure. After taking a bus, you’ll be dropped off at a parking area and then walk about 30 minutes through a peaceful forest trail. At the end, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of wild Japanese macaques. Some of them will be soaking in hot springs baths.
The park is well-managed, and staff do a great job of making sure visitors keep a respectful distance from the monkeys. If anyone gets too close, they’ll even whistle to remind you to step back.
Food and Dining Tips
Shibu Onsen Kokuya offers both breakfast and dinner add-ons. I booked a room with breakfast only, but I wish I would have included dinner as well. Dining options are definitely limited in Yamanouchi Japan. Plus, the food at Shibu Onsen Kokuya was delicious!
A Peaceful Escape from the Crowds
If you’re traveling during peak seasons like cherry blossom time, Yamanouchi Japan offers a refreshing escape from the busy cities. The slower pace and focus on relaxation make it feel like a completely different side of Japan.
Between the calming onsens and the unforgettable visit to the snow monkeys, this destination truly stands out as one of the most unique and relaxing experiences in Japan.
