Changdeokgung vs Gyeongbokgung

If you’re planning a trip to Seoul, one of the most common debates travelers have is Changdeokgung vs Gyeongbokgung. So which palace should you visit when you have limited time in Seoul? Both are stunning pieces of Korea’s history, but if you only have time for one, there is a clear winner.

Why Changdeokgung Is the Best

After exploring both palaces, I can confidently say that Changdeokgung is the best palace to see if you’re visiting Seoul. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and as soon as you step inside, you’ll understand why. The palace grounds are expansive, serene, and full of intricate architectural details. I spent hours wandering through the maze-like layout and continuously found quiet, secluded corners that made the palace feel even more magical. Don’t Miss the Secret Garden

One of Changdeokgung’s biggest highlights is the Secret Garden.  Exploring this portion of the grounds when flowers are blooming can make the “Changdeokgung vs Gyeongbokgung” debate feel settled.

Make sure to buy the additional Secret Garden ticket in advance, as they sell out quickly. Tickets are released online about a week ahead, and they are absolutely worth securing. The garden feels like stepping into a hidden world of ponds, pavilions, and intricate landscaping.

Why People Love Gyeongbokgung

To be fair, Gyeongbokgung is also incredibly popular,  especially because of the Changing of the Guard ceremony. I did really enjoy seeing this ceremony with the colorful uniforms, coordinated movement, and music.

Since it is one of the most famous palaces and is used for filming K-Dramas, it tends to get more crowded. This is especially true around the main gates and during ceremony times. This can make the experience feel a bit more hectic compared to the calm atmosphere of Changdeokgung.

So… Changdeokgung vs Gyeongbokgung, Which Should You Choose?

If you only have time for one, choose Changdeokgung.
It offers more beauty and more to discover, especially with the Secret Garden experience. The maze-like paths and quieter areas create a truly special environment that sets it apart from other palaces in Seoul.

But if you have time for both, visiting Gyeongbokgung for the guard ceremony and Changdeokgung for the serene exploration gives you the perfect balance of Korean royal history.
