Why Insadong Is the Best Area to Stay in Seoul
A Perfect Mix of Traditional and Modern
Insadong stands out as a clear winner when debating where to stay in Seoul because it gives you a more traditional Korean experience while still being centrally located. One of the highlights is the Ikseondong Hanok Village, where you’ll find beautifully preserved traditional buildings. Walking through the neighborhood feels like stepping back in time, but with modern touches. You’ll discover:
- Boutique artisan shops
- Handmade souvenirs
- Cozy cafes with amazing desserts
- Unique experiences like getting your caricature drawn for the perfect souvenir
It’s the kind of place you’ll want to explore more than once. I visited Ikseondong multiple times, both during the day and at night.

Insadong vs. Myeongdong: Where to Stay in Seoul?
Another popular area when researching where to stay in Seoul is Myeongdong, and for good reason.
Myeongdong Pros:
- Endless shopping, especially skincare and fashion
- Tons of food to choose from
- A lively, high-energy atmosphere
But Here’s the Catch:
Myeongdong can get very crowded. If you prefer a calmer area with more traditional architecture, Insadong is the better choice.
Plus, Insadong is only about a 10–15 minute walk away from Myeongdong, making it easy to visit during your trip.

Stay Near Seoul’s Top Attractions
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Insadong is its location. You’ll be within walking distance of major attractions like Changdeokgung Palace, one of the most beautiful palaces in Seoul. This makes it easy to explore without constantly needing transportation.
During my trip, I stayed at Moxy Insadong, and it was such a great choice.
- Clean, modern rooms
- Great location right in Insadong
- Gym and laundry facilities
- Breakfast available
- Fun social spaces with games like foosball
- A rooftop bar with spectacular panoramic views of Seoul
The rooftop bar is the perfect spot for ending your day with a drink while overlooking the city skyline. It’s especially beautiful at sunset.
