If you’re planning a trip to Japan but only have limited time, this one week Japan itinerary is the perfect way to experience the country’s highlights. In just seven nights, you can explore the vibrant city of Tokyo, relax in a traditional hot spring town, and immerse yourself in the historic culture of Kyoto.
I planned this trip during cherry blossom season while working around my spring break schedule. While I would have loved more time, this 7-day Japan itinerary still allowed me to see some of the most iconic places in the country.
Here’s exactly how to plan the perfect one week Japan itinerary.

Why This One Week Japan Itinerary Works
Japan has an incredibly efficient transportation system, which makes it easy to visit multiple destinations in a short time. Navigating your way through Japan is simple between using Google Maps and the English signage and audio.
Before traveling, it’s worth checking whether the Japan Rail Pass could save you money. If you plan to take multiple long-distance trains, the pass can sometimes be a more affordable option. Use this calculator to see if you would save money with the JR pass. For this specific itinerary, it was cheaper for me to buy individual tickets.
This one week Japan itinerary includes three incredible destinations:
Tokyo
Yamanouchi
Kyoto
Days 1–3: Tokyo
Start your one week Japan itinerary with three nights in Tokyo. Tokyo is one of the most exciting cities in the world, with endless food, nightlife, and cultural experiences. I instantly fell in love with this city and would love to return someday.
If you can extend your trip, I would recommend adding an extra night here because there is so much to see.
Visit One of Tokyo’s Best Cherry Blossom Spots
If you’re visiting during spring, you’ll definitely want to see Japan’s famous cherry blossoms.
One of the best places in Tokyo for this is:
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
This large garden has multiple landscapes and wide walking paths, making it one of the most beautiful places in Tokyo to enjoy sakura season.

Take a Mount Fuji Day Trip
A highlight of this one week Japan itinerary is a day trip to see Japan’s most famous mountain, Mount Fuji.
Many guided tours leave from Tokyo and stop at several scenic viewpoints so you can capture amazing photos of Mount Fuji. It’s a great way to experience the countryside without having to plan transportation yourself.
Tokyo Nightlife
Tokyo really comes alive at night. Two famous areas worth checking out include:
Golden Gai – a tiny alleyway filled with quirky micro-bars
Omoide Yokocho Memory Lane– a narrow street full of tiny restaurants and yakitori spots
You can also join a Tokyo bar crawl, which is a fun way to meet other travelers and experience the nightlife.
Day 4: Yamanouchi (Snow Monkeys & Hot Springs)
After Tokyo, head to the charming town of Yamanouchi. This area is known for its hot springs and nearby snow monkey park.
Visit the Famous Snow Monkey Park
The main attraction here is the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park.
This park is home to wild Japanese macaques that relax in natural hot springs during the colder months. Watching the monkeys soak in the steaming water is one of the most unique wildlife experiences in Japan.
NOTE: You will have to walk about 30 minutes in the forest to get to the Snow Monkey Park.

Stay in a Traditional Ryokan
While visiting Yamanouchi, staying in a traditional ryokan (Japanese inn) is highly recommended.
Many accommodations include private or shared onsen hot spring baths. When you stay in this town, you also get access to the public onsens throughout the town. I opted for a room with a patio and private onsen at Shibu Onsen Kokuya. This was truly one of the best stays of my life. The hospitality was incredible and the food was delicious. I loved relaxing in my private onsen as well as spending time in some of their other onsens at this property. This was a once in a lifetime experience and I highly recommend it.
Days 5–7: Kyoto
The final stop on this one week Japan itinerary is Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan. Kyoto is famous for its historic temples, traditional tea houses, and incredible food.
Take a Kyoto Food Tour
One of the best ways to explore Kyoto is by joining a walking food tour. These tours introduce you to traditional dishes while also teaching you about the history of the city. I highly recommend this Nishiki Market Brunch Tour. We grabbed snacks throughout the market and had a full meal at a restaurant.
Check out the variety of food tours below.
Attend a Geisha Dinner Experience
Another unforgettable experience is attending a traditional geisha dinner at Maikoya.
A maiko or geisha will join your dinner. Not only will you see a traditional performance, but you’ll even get to play drinking games with the geisha. It was truly an unforgettable experience and I even won a round of the drinking game. Maikoya also offers other geisha experiences.
Visit the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
One of Kyoto’s most famous attractions is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
I went to the Bamboo Grove on my own, but you could also take a tour. To avoid the crowds, try to arrive around 8:00 AM.
Many visitors only take photos here and leave, but the surrounding area is beautiful and worth exploring. There are scenic walking paths and hiking trails that offer incredible views.
If you have limited time in Kyoto, this would be something I would skip. It was alright and I’m glad I saw it, but I much preferred Fushimi Inari.

Hike Fushimi Inari Shrine
One of the most iconic places in Kyoto is Fushimi Inari and for good reason! This was one of my favorite experiences in Kyoto and I would absolutely do this again!
This shrine is famous for its thousands of bright red torii gates that form tunnels along the mountain trail.
Most tourists only walk through the first section, but if you hike all the way to the top, you’ll find fewer crowds and much more peaceful scenery.
I opted to go on my own, but there’s also a Hidden Fushimi Hiking Tour you can take.

Final Thoughts on This One Week Japan Itinerary
If you only have limited time, this one week Japan itinerary is a great way to experience the country’s highlights.
In just seven nights you can:
Explore the incredible city of Tokyo
Take a scenic trip to see Mount Fuji
Relax in a private onsen in Yamanouchi
Have dinner with a geisha in Kyoto
Even with only a week, Japan offers an unforgettable mix of cities, nature, and incredible food.
If possible, I would add one more night in Tokyo, but this itinerary is still an amazing introduction to Japan, especially if you’re visiting during cherry blossom season.
