What to Expect on a DMZ Tour in Korea
A DMZ tour in Korea takes a deeper look at the history of the Korean War along with ongoing tensions. As someone who loves history, I found this fascinating.
Here’s what you can expect to see on your tour:
- Memorial Park
You’ll start at a memorial site where you’ll learn about the impact and history of the war. - Infiltration Tunnels
One of the most unique parts of the tour is going inside tunnels dug by North Korea into South Korea. Walking through them feels surreal and gives you a real sense of the tension that still exists today. This was my favorite part of the tour. - Observatory Stop
You’ll visit an observatory where you can take a look into North Korea. While this sounds exciting, you really don’t see much, basically just some buildings. If it’s a foggy day, it’s even harder to see. - Educational Experience
Much of the tour focuses on explaining the history, so expect to spend a lot of time learning. This probably would not be a great fit for children.

Important Things to Know About a DMZ Tour in Korea
- Limited Photography
You won’t be able to take many pictures, especially in sensitive areas. - It’s a Long Tour
This can take up a big chunk of your day, so plan accordingly. - History-Focused
If you’re not into history, parts of the tour may feel slow.
Don’t Skip Majang Suspension Bridge
If you’re booking a DMZ tour in Korea, I highly recommend choosing one that includes the Majang Suspension Bridge, like the one I took here.
There are two suspension bridges often offered as add-ons, so pay close attention when you’re booking your tickets because there will be tours to each suspension bridge listed. Majang is the better choice because:
- The views over the lake are beautiful
- It’s less crowded
- It adds a scenic, relaxing break after the heavy history of the DMZ

Is a DMZ Tour in Korea Worth It?
A DMZ tour in Korea is absolutely worth it if:
- You’re interested in history
- You want a deeper understanding of North and South Korea
- You have at least 3–4 days in Seoul
However, if you only have two days in Seoul, you might want to skip it and focus on exploring the city instead, unless you’re a big history buff. I also wouldn’t recommend this tour for younger children.
Final Thoughts
A DMZ tour in Korea is a unique, educational experience that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. While it may not be the most visually exciting tour, it offers powerful insight into a divided peninsula and its history.
If you have the time and an interest in history, it’s definitely worth adding to your Seoul itinerary. Make sure to check out my 8-day South Korea Itinerary!

Where to Stay in Seoul
I loved staying at the Moxy Insadong because of how close it was to Ikseondong Hanok Village. Check out the map below for other hotels in the area.
