Baan Kang Wat: Chiang Mai’s Hidden Artisan Village You Can’t Miss

Share:

If you’re visiting Chiang Mai, you have to go to Baan Kang Wat. Tucked away from the busy Old City, this charming artisan village offers a more creative side of northern Thailand that’s perfect for travelers looking for something unique.

What is Baan Kang Wat?

Baan Kang Wat is a picturesque artisan village filled with locally owned shops, studios, and cafes. It’s the kind of place where creativity is everywhere, from handmade goods to interactive experiences.

As you wander through the village, you’ll find beautifully crafted souvenirs that feel much more personal than anything you’d pick up at a typical market. They have hand-stitched leather goods, ceramics, artwork, and more. Your purchase helps support local artists.

Fair warning, Baan Kang Wat can get very busy, but I never found the crowds unbearable.

Shop Handmade Crafts and Make Your Own at Baan Kang Wat

One of the best parts about visiting Baan Kang Wat is there’s more to do than just shop. You can also create your own unique art piece.

Several shops offer DIY tables where you can try your hand at crafting your own souvenir. During my visit, I spotted experiences like:

  • Decorating a leather-bound journal
  • Painting on canvas
  • Customizing small figurines

It’s such a fun way to take home a special souvenir to remember your trip.

Don’t Leave Without Trying the Khao Soi

While the crafts are a huge draw, the food here is just as amazing, especially the Khao Soi.

The Khao Soi at Baan Kang Wat was easily the best I had in Chiang Mai. It was rich, flavorful, and the meat fell right off the bone from it simmering in pots for an extended amount of time.

What you should know:

  • It gets very busy
  • You’ll be given a numbered ticket for seating
  • The wait can be a bit long

But trust me, it’s completely worth it. Just plan ahead and give yourself enough time to enjoy the experience without rushing.

Tips for Visiting Baan Kang Wat

  • Go earlier in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds
  • Bring cash for smaller shops
  • Allow extra time if you want to try a DIY activity
  • Be patient with food lines, especially for Khao Soi

Final Thoughts on Baan Kang Wat

Don’t leave Chiang Mai without visiting Baan Kang Wat. Between the handmade crafts, DIY workshops, and incredible food, it’s one of the most unique and memorable spots in the city.

If you’re looking for meaningful souvenirs, creative experiences, and a taste of authentic northern Thai food, this artisan village absolutely delivers.

Where to Stay in Chiang Mai

If you are looking for a bougie stay, I highly recommend checking out the Chiang Mai Marriott. It’s also located next to a night market.

The Green Tiger house is in a more central location and offers a vegan restaurant. Plus they have cats on the property! What more could you want?
