Inside the Pyramids of Egypt

Going inside the pyramids of Egypt is one of those bucket-list adventures that sounds incredible, but the experience can vary depending on which pyramid you choose. After visiting multiple sites on my solo trip, I learned that not all pyramid interiors are created equal. Some are much more enjoyable than others.

Why I Skipped Going Inside the Great Pyramid

The Great Pyramid of Giza is incredible to see in person, but I personally chose not to go inside. For starters, it gets extremely hot and crowded, especially during peak hours. The narrow walkways funnel everyone in the same direction, which can become overwhelming.

If you’re claustrophobic, you probably won’t enjoy going inside the Great Pyramid. The tunnels are tight, steep, and require a lot of crouching. There’s also not much to actually see inside. The interior is mostly empty stone chambers. The artifacts and detailed carvings were removed long ago.

It’s also worth noting that going inside the Great Pyramid can be physically demanding. You’ll need decent mobility to navigate the low ceilings and uneven walkways. This could be difficult if you have limited mobility.

Going Inside the Red Pyramid Instead

Instead, I chose to go inside the pyramids at Dahshur, specifically the Red Pyramid. I’m so glad I chose to explore this one. While it still has a wooden plank walkway that requires crouching down, it’s smaller and way less crowded. This makes for a much more enjoyable experience.

When I visited, there were only a couple of other people entering the pyramid. At one point, I was completely alone inside, which made the experience feel surreal. Being able to explore without crowds is much more peaceful.

The Red Pyramid offers a similar structural experience to the Great Pyramid, without the stress, heat, or crowds. If you want the experience of actually being inside a pyramid, this is one of the best options.

A Pyramid with Incredible Artifacts: The Pyramid of Unas

Another standout experience was at the Saqqara Complex. While I admired the Step Pyramid from the outside, I decided to go inside the Pyramid of Unas, which can easily be overlooked.

Don’t judge a book by its cover here. From the outside, it looks like a pile of rubble, but the inside is truly impressive. The Pyramid of Unas has some of the most intact artifacts still left inside any pyramid in Egypt. You’ll find hieroglyphics carved into alabaster walls and a sarcophagus still in place. This is one of the most visually interesting interiors you can visit.

Another benefit of choosing to go inside the Pyramid of Unas, is that it does not take long to make it to the chamber. There are no long walkways that you have to crouch your way through for an extended period of time. This would be the perfect pyramid to explore if you aren’t able to handle the physical demands of the others.

Is Going Inside the Pyramids of Egypt Worth It?

Going inside the pyramids of Egypt can absolutely be worth it, but choosing the right ones matters. If you’re sensitive to heat, crowds, or tight spaces, skipping the Great Pyramid doesn’t mean you’re missing out. The Red Pyramid and the Pyramid of Unas offer more rewarding, less stressful experiences with fewer people and more to actually see.

If you’re going to pick just one or two, I’d recommend prioritizing those where you can truly take your time and appreciate what makes these ancient structures so incredible.
